Hepatic Lipase C-514T Polymorphism - (High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol)
This effect is also "recessive", meaning that each gene is expressed
independently of the other. Thus a TT genotype would, in general, have
twice as much of an increase of HDL-C as a CT genotype when
compared to a CC genotype.
This genetic influence on hepatic lipase appears to occur only in males.
Environmental factors are also involved. Drugs, such as anabolic
steroids, increase hepatic lipase activity and cause a proportional
reduction in plasma levels.
Cigarette smoking, obesity , and lack of exercise are other environmental
factors that are associated with low HDL-C. However, in these cases, it
has not yet been determined if the effect is via a change in hepatic lipase
or some other metabolic function.
