Nutrigenomics & Personalized Nutrition, leading towards Personalized Medicine

  • It is becoming increasingly clear that many of the chronic diseases like atherosclerosis, hypertension, type II diabetes and obesity result from sustained metabolic imbalances and they all contribute as major risk factors leading to coronary heart disease. Scientific studies have identified diet, oxidative stress, and inflammations the major mechanistic factors contributing to metabolic imbalances involved in the development of coronary heart disease. Nutrients can play an important role in modulating mechanisms responsible for these metabolic imbalances. The field of nutrigenomics is designed to identify genetic mutations that will influence response to nutrients will have a major impact on individual selection of nutrients. This ability of nutrigenomics to determine what (and how) selected nutrients will produce the desired impact on metabolic balance (as influenced by individual genetic make up) is at the core of Personalized Nutrition.

In accordance with the growing desire of the American public to control their health through preventive measures such as changing lifestyles and personalizing diet, MDL has developed several panels of genetic tests that could further define individual dietary supplement and nutraceutical needs. These tests help to identify genetic mutations that negatively impact on indicators that predict increased risk of common metabolic diseases and thereby, giving individuals an opportunity to personalize diet to improve health.
